Abnormal Loads Route Surveys & Permits
DCS Logistics Nationwide Pilot Cars for the UK
DCS Logistics are experts at carrying out route surveys to assess the suitability of proposed routes for all abnormal loads. All abnormal loads need careful route planning – we have produced many highly detailed route surveys and plans for wide loads, high loads, heavy loads and long loads.
When route surveys are complete, we were able to provide our client with a step-by-step document of the route with very specific locations and bridge heights.
This is then used by the haulier driver and DCS Abnormal load escort services driver to ensure the load reaches it’s destination in the most efficient and safe way possible.
If you would like us to help plan your route, please contact us to discuss your needs.

There is no statutory limit governing the overall height of an abnormal load, however, if the Convoi Exceptionnel has a loaded dimension between 4.5m and 4.95m high, we can supply a route plan in order to maximise the use of the motorway and trunk road network, making the delivery of your abnormal load cost effective. However, if your convoy is more than 4.95m high you will require a pilot Escort.
Length
The abnormal load permit is valid up to 30m rigid length. Anything over this will require a Highway Authority Special Order VR1 , this Abnormal Load Permit can be obtained in 6-8 weeks maximum. The abnormal load will also require Pilot Escorts and depending on the complexity of the movement Police Assistance or Police Escort.
Width
The Abnormal Load Permit is only valid up to 5.0m, anything wider will also require a Highway Authority VR1 License , which can take 6-8 weeks to obtain. Width exceeding 6.1m will also require a Highway Authority Special Order BE16 Authorisation.
Pilot escorts are required if the load is over 3.50m.
Weight
The Abnormal Load Permit is only valid up to 150,000kgs. Anything over requires a Highway Authorities BE16 Authorisation, which can take up to 6-8 weeks to obtain.
